Sophisticated commercial lighting design for one of Conwy’s most distinguished boutique hotel and restaurant venues.
Case Study
The Midland in Conwy is a boutique hotel and restaurant that has established itself as one of North Wales’ premier hospitality destinations. Renowned for its refined interiors and exceptional dining experience, the venue required a lighting scheme that would elevate the guest experience across multiple distinct spaces — from intimate dining areas and the main restaurant floor to reception, corridors, and outdoor façade illumination.
Oleco was appointed as the specialist electrical contractor to design and deliver the complete commercial lighting installation. The project demanded a considered approach that balanced technical performance with the venue’s distinctive aesthetic identity, ensuring each space received the precise lighting treatment required to create the desired atmosphere.
The Midland’s ownership team presented a clear vision: they required a lighting scheme that would complement the venue’s carefully curated interior design while delivering practical, energy-efficient illumination suitable for a commercial hospitality environment. The brief encompassed several critical requirements that would shape every aspect of the project.
The restaurant area needed layered lighting capable of transitioning seamlessly from daytime lunch service to evening fine dining — a shift in ambience that demanded programmable scene-setting capabilities and carefully selected colour temperatures. The hotel’s communal areas required welcoming yet functional illumination that guided guests through the space without compromising the intimacy of the surroundings.
Energy efficiency was a commercial priority. The client needed a system that would reduce operational costs without sacrificing the quality of light — a balance that requires genuine expertise in luminaire specification and control system design. All work needed to comply fully with BS 7671 wiring regulations and relevant hospitality-sector electrical standards, with minimal disruption to ongoing business operations during the installation phase.
Oleco’s lighting design team conducted an extensive site survey and consultation process, working closely with the venue’s interior designers and management to develop a scheme that would meet every aspect of the brief. The resulting design integrated multiple lighting layers — ambient, task, accent, and decorative — each carefully calibrated to the function and character of the individual spaces.
For the restaurant, we specified a combination of dimmable LED downlights in warm white tones, bespoke pendant fixtures positioned to define dining zones, and concealed linear accent lighting that highlighted the venue’s architectural features. A programmable lighting control system was installed to enable staff to shift between pre-configured scenes with a single input — from bright and welcoming for lunch service to subdued and atmospheric for evening dining.
The hotel reception and corridors received a considered scheme of recessed and wall-mounted luminaires, designed to create a warm, navigable environment that maintained consistency with the restaurant’s overall palette. External façade lighting was designed to enhance the building’s historic character and provide a strong visual presence on the streetscape — an important consideration for a venue that relies on its kerb appeal.
All luminaires were specified as high-efficiency LED units, significantly reducing the venue’s lighting energy consumption compared to the previous installation. The control system was designed to allow future expansion and integration with building management systems as the venue’s requirements evolve.
The completed lighting installation has transformed The Midland’s guest experience. The restaurant now transitions effortlessly between service periods, with the programmable scene-setting system receiving consistent praise from both staff and guests. The layered approach delivers the intimate, sophisticated ambience that defines the venue’s reputation.
Energy consumption from lighting has been reduced substantially, delivering measurable savings on the venue’s operational costs — a critical outcome for any commercial hospitality operation. The system’s reliability has been exceptional, with zero unplanned downtime since installation, ensuring uninterrupted service for the venue’s guests.
The project was delivered on schedule and within budget, with phased installation managed to avoid any disruption to the venue’s trading hours. The Midland continues to be a flagship project for Oleco’s commercial lighting design capability, demonstrating our ability to deliver technically accomplished, aesthetically refined lighting solutions for the hospitality sector.
This project exemplifies Oleco’s approach to commercial lighting: precision engineering, creative design thinking, and a deep understanding of how light shapes the commercial performance of a space.
